We describe practical algorithms from computational algebraic number theory, with applications to class field theory. These include basic arithmetic, approximation and uniformizers, discrete logarithms and computation of class fields. All algorithms have been implemented in the Pari/Gp system.

متن کاملA History of Selected Topics in Categorical Algebra I: From Galois Theory to Abstract Commutators and Internal Groupoids
This paper is a chronological survey, with no proofs, of a direction in categorical algebra, which is based on categorical Galois theory and involves generalized central extensions, commutators, and internal groupoids in Barr exact Mal’tsev and more general categories. Galois theory proposes a notion of central extension, and motivates the study of internal groupoids, which is then used as an a...
متن کاملNicholas Pippenger Algebraic Complexity Theory
Algebraic complexity theory, the study of the minimum number of operations suficient o perform algebraic computations, is surveyed with emphasis on the general theory of bilinear forms and two of its applications: polynomial multiplication and matrix multiplication. Though by no means exhausting algebraic complexity theory, these topics illustrate well its development and its methods, and ...
متن کاملLectures on Topics in Algebraic Number Theory
2 Preface During December 2000, I gave a course of ten lectures on Algebraic Number Theory at the University of Kiel in Germany. These lectures were aimed at giving a rapid introduction to some basic aspects of Algebraic Number Theory with as few prerequisites as possible. I had also hoped to cover some parts of Algebraic Geometry based on the idea, which goes back to Dedekind, that algebraic n...
متن کاملAlgorithms in Algebraic Number Theory
In this paper we discuss the basic problems of algorithmic algebraic number theory. The emphasis is on aspects that are of interest from a purely mathematical point of view, and practical issues are largely disregarded. We describe what has been done and, more importantly, what remains to be done in the area. We hope to show that the study of algorithms not only increases our understanding of a...
